Adult Swim's Top New Show of 2025 Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
