Afghan Rulers Used Abandoned UK Gear to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Troops, Investigation Learns
A confidential source has revealed an official investigation that British authorities left behind classified technology enabling the Taliban to track down Afghans that had served with allied troops.
Data Breach Puts Numerous at Risk
The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were told to move homes and alter their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.
Members of Parliament are currently examining the UK government's management of a serious breach of confidential data involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to flee the regime.
The Information Breach Happened
An electronic document including private information, such as names, addresses and sometimes household data, was accidentally leaked by an official working at special operations center in last year.
The breach came to light only in August 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in Britain surfaced on Facebook.
Militant Technology
It appears there is a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. That's precisely what intelligence groups achieved.”
Under inquiry about if militant forces owned sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”
Impact of the Information Leak
Preliminary research presented to the investigation estimated that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.
A gag order about the breach was put in force in late 2023 and restricted relevant facts about it from public disclosure until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, the source and the non-governmental organization she was working with told individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been compromised”.
“We advised that they change residence where feasible and altered their contact details. Those were the two main details that, if authorities acquired such data, would result in their location being found,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
Person A disputed that internal investigation performed by a former official had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the dataset by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to former occupations.”
She detailed terrible abuse endured by concerned people, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to pressure the family to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
