Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
