Cameron Norrie secured the biggest success of his career by rallying from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's first ever win over a current world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the newest UK male player in history to defeat a world No 1. "Coming back from health issues last year, I fell in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just tried to embrace my tennis in the second half of the year. To achieve a win like this, it's the biggest victory of my career, my first win over the global number one and arguably the most confident competitor in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, positioned No 31, also ended Alcaraz's impressive run of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which represented the finest stretch of outcomes in the Spanish star's early career.

Contest Breakdown

The top seed looked to be progressing easily towards victory early on as he sailed in the first set. However, the British contender steadily fought his way back into the game by delivering with greater precision and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling points. His unceasing steadiness and dependability gradually took its toll.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The rising talent appeared especially struggling hitting his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for most of this year, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 errors. Across the net, the British player gave his opponent very few errors, keeping up his steadiness, physicality and penetration all match while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to move into the court and strike effectively.
