Cameroonian Opposition Leader Faces Legal Action Over Post-Election Violence, Government Announces

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon express anger that Paul Biya has secured an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has stated that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he incited "violent election protests".

At least four demonstrators have been lost their lives during clashes between law enforcement and protesters since Cameroon's election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth term in office.

Tchiroma Bakary insists that he was the true winner, a assertion disputed by Biya's ruling party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on demonstrators have concerned the global community, with the UN, AU and EU urging moderation.

Official's Allegations

Earlier this week, Nji alleged the opposition figure of organising what he described as "unlawful" protests leading to the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators involved in an rebellious scheme" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October presidential election with over half of the votes, compared to a significant minority for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Issa Tchiroma is has not yet commented to the government's decision to bring him to court, but he had before declared that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he reported that gunmen opened fire on protesters gathered near his house in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 people.

Inquiry Revealed

Recently, the interior minister disclosed that an inquiry would be initiated into clashes before and after the publication of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved were killed," he stated, without offering a precise figure of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that several officers of the security forces also sustained significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

While Nji maintained the state of affairs throughout Cameroon was now under control, demonstrators continue to protest in certain regions of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators established roadblocks on Tuesday, and set fire to tyres on the roads.

Experts warn that the election-related unrest could push the nation into a leadership vacuum.
