Heavy Rains Worsen Conditions for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Agencies Caution
Persistent precipitation over the recent period have compounded the already dire living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as reported by relief organizations.
"Horrendous" Night Poses Serious Threats
A spokesman characterized the recent storm as "terrible", with rain so severe that up to 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the ground.
"The recent weather was exceptionally difficult for the residents. The storms were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," stated the representative.
Officials express significant worry that young ones sheltering in makeshift shelters in damp clothing will succumb to hypothermia and other ailments.
Fatalities and Significant Loss
Health authorities have stated that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and at least 11 other people have been killed in structural failures caused by the storms.
Other reports suggest a higher number of casualties. Officials said that multiple structures had fully given way and many others had been partly destroyed.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by flooding.
- More than 40 official refuges inundated.
- Numerous individuals compelled to find new shelter.
Aid Distribution Seen as Inadequate
Agencies have increased distribution of tents, blankets and garments following the truce commenced, but they have said there is still not enough aid getting in.
"Officials are working relentlessly to bring in that assistance and to hand it out, but the scale of the requirements is so immense that we continue to see many thousands of families and minors who are truly struggling nightly," cautioned one official.
Ongoing Challenges and Ceasefire Plans
The subsequent part of the ceasefire includes plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of military forces, and other provisions.
Relief groups have stressed the imperative for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to meet pressing and ongoing requirements."
The war was triggered by an attack in late 2023. Subsequent actions have resulted in a substantial number of fatalities in the territory, based on health ministry figures.
