Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
