Jailhouse Surprise: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He fought the legal system and the legal system won.

Sixty days following getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Jailing

The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been living under home confinement in his mansion while a set of legal procedures and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amidst increasing rumors that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security facility.

Previous Remarks on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing former paratrooper displayed scant sympathy for the country's inmates.

“Why should we provide those scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, period. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to end up behind bars, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Facility Debate

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent effort to dissuade the judiciary from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he expected the septuagenarian figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is highly critical. He cannot to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” said the senator, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing forty detainees: “It's virtually one square metre per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the only voice speaking out before the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.

Writing in a leading publication, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest political injustice in its record”.

“It is an wrong that erodes the hearts of millions of Brazilians,” he stated.

Mixed General Response

This could be accurate due to the considerable following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. But his predicted imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of many others who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to prevent the elected leader from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the incumbent leader's political party, stated: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to obtain dignified treatment – but respectful handling behind bars. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the harsh handling of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that basic rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a penitentiary to learn what situations are actually like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected destination appears to be a adjacent jail for officers and other “unique” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the impressive leader's home, around a short distance away.

According to sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a television and even a minibar in his room as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” information suggested.

Ideological Comments

The lawmaker criticized the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
