New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
