The boxing world has been a significant decline this year, with few major fights and considerably fewer engaging contests than usual. The anticipation of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight battle between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the struggling sport. The last man standing will very likely face the world champion Usyk next season. In opposition, the defeated fighter is probably going to mourn the certain decline of their hard-won plaudits.

He invariably recovers but Wardley hits harder than any opponent he's encountered – with the exception of Wilder who appeared diminished of a knockout artist when Parker secured a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only began his boxing career when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has always had to overcome skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have taken a risk when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Parker is eager to compete regardless.

“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his chance. He said ‘No.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and what he has done and his preparation for this fight. But I am on a superior tier and I am intending to prove it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. This Saturday will be the same. The divide between Parker's status and what others believe about me has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a many bouts on his resume. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the boxing world for a significant time and had several tough bouts. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

The Final Verdict

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker should prove too experienced, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the leading contender for a title shot against Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a significant margin.
