According to a ex- senior officer from the UK's largest police force, police departments are increasingly pressured to publicly share the ethnic backgrounds of individuals under investigation in response to a surge in extremist conjecture on online networks.

Case Study: Knife Attack on Train in Cambridgeshire

On Sunday morning, British Transport Police announced the arrest of two men following a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a 32-year-old black British national, and a second, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were taken into custody. Subsequently, the older suspect was released with no charges, and police confirmed he had no connection in the attack.

New Guidance to Combat Misinformation

This past summer, new guidelines were issued to tackle the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the tragic murder of young students in a English town last summer.

However, advocates warned that this approach could lead to an overemphasis on the racial background of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are withheld with the general population.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who served in the Metropolitan Police, labeled the requirement for police to disclose the race of suspects in cases involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He voiced understanding for his ex-peers in the police, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose district includes the area where the train halted, described it “unfortunate” but necessary for authorities to swiftly release the racial identities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, stating that social media are leveraged to advance narratives, making it critical for police to provide facts to address rumors.

Far-Right Exploitation

Before the official disclosure, conservative figures had called for a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while Nigel Farage posted on X that the public should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. A profile named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Even after authorities confirmed that the suspects were UK citizens, some individuals continued to suggest that details was being concealed. Ben Habib claimed it was “hard to believe” that the attack was not an act of terrorism, contrary to official statements to the opposite.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were developed by the UK police leadership body in acknowledgment of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came shortly after a political party alleged that officials of concealing the details and migrant background of two men accused in a separate case in a UK county.

Previous Instances

Earlier this year, when a car ploughed into crowds marking Liverpool FC’s winning, local authorities revealed that the suspect was white and British to dispels myths of a extremist-related incident by an Asian man.
