The Chainsaw Man Film Tops the U.S. Box Office in Opening Weekend

Did Sony repeated their success? Coming after the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in more than $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the hundred-million-dollar threshold internationally, reaching a worldwide gross of over $108 million in its opening frame. This movie outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Impressive U.S. and Worldwide Performance

The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed over $18 million in North America after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday take. Globally, the MAPPA-produced movie added nearly $15 million across 46 international territories, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million under Sony (over $43 million international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Official totals are still pending from Sony its official box office total.

Comparisons to Previous Anime Hits

Promotional firm White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34M in the domestic market in 2022 and started with a nearly identical eighteen million dollars stateside. Reze Arc’s debut weekend is in line with that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross presently stands a bit short of that movie's $166.6 million final run. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will match the numbers of smash success the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a significant success for Sony.

Marketing Efforts Fuel Box Office Dominance

The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged audience interaction to boost their leadership at the anime box office. The Reze Arc marketing campaign kicked off at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and photo opportunities with Pochita, and later included a notable appearance at the New York Comic Con featuring behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and influencers alike after the concluding day of the convention.

Looking Ahead

This year marks a big year for animated films, and for the studio, which has another feature-length anime releasing in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
