The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
