The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, announced how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal series highlighting causes the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
The recent development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created in 2016 to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
