Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
