On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
